What Is Clinical Massage for Back, Neck and Shoulder Pain?

Clinical massage at Willow Massage Centre in East Belfast is a targeted, hands on treatment for areas that feel stiff, tight or sore. After a short consultation, your therapist uses techniques such as deep tissue work, trigger point release and stretching to work on the muscles around the problem area, and often the muscles that feed into it.

For example, shoulder pain often involves the chest and arms as well as the back, and neck tension can start in the middle of the back. Looking at the whole picture is why our therapists often work on more than the spot that hurts.

It is a practical treatment aimed at helping you move more comfortably, and it can sit alongside advice from your GP or physiotherapist.

Tailored to You, Priced by Time

At Willow, our massage centre in East Belfast, you pay for the time, and we work on what you need. Your therapist will start with a short consultation about where it hurts, how long you have had it and what makes it better or worse, then tailor the treatment within your booked time. The treatment you book is where we start, not a limit. Treatments for the lower back, upper back, neck, shoulders and headaches are also in our online booking system, with prices shown there.

Possible Benefits of Clinical Massage

  1. May ease muscle tension and stiffness in the back, neck and shoulders.
  2. May help with headaches linked to muscle tightness.
  3. May help you move more freely and comfortably.
  4. Gives you time to talk through what is causing your discomfort and what may help.

Massage may help you feel more comfortable and relaxed, but it does not replace medical care or physiotherapy. Please tell your therapist about any medical conditions or injuries before your treatment.

Who Clinical Massage Suits

Clinical massage suits adults with ongoing aches and tension, including people who sit at a desk or drive for long periods, people who lift or work on their feet, and anyone whose back, neck or shoulders feel tight at the end of the day. It is also a good choice if you get regular tension headaches and want a treatment focused on the neck and shoulders.

If you have severe or worsening pain, numbness or pins and needles, or pain after an accident, please see your GP first. Your therapist can then adapt the treatment around any advice you have been given.

Meet Your Clinical Massage Therapists

Clinical massage is offered by our sports and remedial therapists. Choose the treatment that suits you and we will make sure you are booked with a therapist who offers it.

Cameron

Cameron is our newest therapist and specialises in sports and remedial work. His training in chiropractic care gives him a good understanding of how the body works as a whole, so he looks beyond where it hurts to find the cause. His clinical sessions are available from 30 to 90 minutes, and he is at Willow on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Blaithin

Blaithin joined the Willow team recently and offers clinical massage alongside sports, deep tissue and Swedish treatments. She also offers our upper back, lower back, neck, shoulder and headache treatments.

Treatments for Each Area

You can book a general clinical massage and tell your therapist where you need help, or choose a treatment built around one area. All of these are available to book online.

  • Lower back pain, 1 hour, £55. Tension in the lower back is often linked to tight muscles at the back of the legs, so we work on both for the best results.
  • Upper back pain, 30 minutes, £40. Focused attention on the upper back, with pressure that suits you.
  • Neck pain, 45 minutes, £48. Our back, neck and head massage works the muscles that run from the base of the skull down the back.
  • Shoulder pain, 1 hour, £55. We often work on the chest and arms as well as the back, so the whole area is treated.
  • Headache treatment, 1 hour, £55. Focuses on the neck and back muscles that support the skull, at the pressure you prefer, and hot stones can be added.

Not sure which to choose? Call us on 02890 504695 and we will help you decide.

Related Treatments

If you are not sure clinical massage is the right fit, these treatments at our East Belfast massage centre may also suit you: our sports massage for active bodies, our deep tissue massage for long held tension, or the Emmett Technique for gentle, targeted work. You can also meet the therapists who offer them.

Back, Neck and Shoulder Pain Massage FAQs

Your therapist will start with a short consultation about where you feel pain or tightness, how long you have had it and what makes it better or worse. They will then tailor the treatment to you, using techniques such as deep tissue work, trigger point release and stretching, at a pressure you are comfortable with.

Many clients book clinical massage for tight, aching backs, and it can ease muscle tension around the area. It is not a substitute for medical care, so if you have severe, worsening or unexplained pain, please see your GP and let your therapist know before you book.

Our neck pain treatment is a 45 minute back, neck and head massage, and our shoulder pain treatment is a one hour session that also works the chest and arms. If your neck and shoulders are both tight, a longer clinical massage gives your therapist time to treat both areas.

If your headaches are linked to tight muscles in the neck and upper back, a massage focused on those areas may help. Our headache treatment works on the muscles that support the skull, and hot stones can be added. Please see your GP about headaches that are new, severe or frequent.

Thirty minutes suits one small area such as the upper back. For most clients we suggest 45 or 60 minutes, and 75 or 90 minutes if you want to treat more than one area or have long standing tension.

At Willow Massage Centre, clinical massage is priced by time: 30 minutes is £40, 45 minutes is £48, 60 minutes is £55, 75 minutes is £60 and 90 minutes is £70. Area treatments for the back, neck, shoulders and headaches are shown in our online booking system.

It should feel firm and effective but not painful. Some areas may feel tender, particularly knotted muscles, but please tell your therapist if the pressure is too much and they will adjust straight away.

You will usually remove clothing from the area being treated, and you will be covered with a towel so you stay comfortable. Your therapist will explain what is needed, and you can keep underwear on.

It depends on how long you have had the problem. Many people have a first session and then another a week or two later while the area settles, then less often. Your therapist can suggest a pattern for you. Our Back Pack offers a course of treatments at a saving.

Please tell us if you are pregnant before you book. We offer a dedicated pregnancy massage, adapted and supported with pillows, and we will help you choose the right treatment.

Book online through our booking system or call 02890 504695 for same day appointments. We are at 90 Castlereagh Road, East Belfast.
