TLDR:
π September in Belfast means routine returns, cooler mornings & more indoor contact π€§ Β but those sniffles and tired feelings are signals to rest, not push through.
Histamine is your natural immune ally, not a toxin 𧬠β and that “puffy face” is more likely from poor sleep, dehydration or salty food than a fancy intolerance.
1 in 5 in Northern Ireland live with a lung condition π« β so know the red flags (too breathless to speak/sleep = call 999 π¨) and keep up with your personal action plan.
Feeling unwell? Rearrange your massage π Β we will be here when you are better. When you are well, book Swedish for calm, hot stones for warmth, or reflexology for quiet focus β¨
Between sessions: try gentle facial lymphatic drainage, cat cow stretches for your back, and a 5 minute sensory retreat at home π§
Stay hydrated, prioritise sleep, and check your flu/RSV vaccine eligibility π

Β September 2026 | Belfast
At Willow Massage Centre, we believe wellbeing information should feel reassuring, not overwhelming.
This month, we are focusing on histamines, lung health and respiratory wellbeing: what they mean, what local information is telling us, and when the kindest thing you can do is pause, rest and rearrange your treatment.
September has a particular feel in Belfast. The routine starts up again, mornings become cooler, and many of us notice more sniffles, tiredness or a tight feeling through the shoulders after busy days indoors.Β
It is a good time to be kind to your body, but it is also a good time to be clear about what is happening.
Northern Ireland’s latest respiratory surveillance report, covering 31 August to 6 September 2026 (Week 36), recorded a GP acute-respiratory-infection consultation rate of 117.3 per 100,000 people. In the same week, rhinovirus positivity was 13.2%; influenza activity remained stable at baseline levels, RSV remained low with no detected episodes, and COVID-19 activity had increased slightly to 4.7% positivity but was still described as low, so we’re still doing good!
That is a useful reminder to stay alert, but not a reason to panic. Colds and flu are caused by viruses, not by a chilly morning or a change in weather.
(See NHS guidelines on telling the difference between Colds and Flu here)
As autumn routines bring more indoor contact and respiratory viruses continue to circulate, good hand hygiene, rest when unwell, and timely health advice all matter.
Willowβs September message: Feeling under the weather is a signal to slow down, not something to push through with a treatment.
If you have a high temperature, feel too unwell for your normal activities, have a new contagious illness, or are unusually breathless or wheezy, please rearrange your appointment. The NHS advises staying home and avoiding contact with others if you have a high temperature or do not feel well enough to carry on as normal.
Separating fact from fiction about this natural immune chemical
When mast cells recognise an allergen, they release histamine and other chemicals. This triggers allergy symptoms as part of your body's defence mechanism.
Some people experience allergy like symptoms from histamine and other naturally occurring vasoactive amines in food.
Important: According to Allergy UK, there are no reliable tests for histamine sensitivity. A restrictive food trial should only be undertaken with guidance from a health professional, ideally a dietitian, not from generic social media food lists.
A blocked nose, sneezing or watery eyes may be caused by allergy, but they can also occur with a cold or another respiratory illness.
Did you know? The Met Office reports that weed pollen season can extend through September, so late season symptoms are understandable and often confusing.
Speak with a healthcare professional if your symptoms are:
Understanding the scale and knowing when to act
Respiratory health is not a niche concern in Northern Ireland. According to Asthma + Lung UK Northern Ireland:
Respiratory disease is among the top three causes of death in the region.
For people with asthma, allergies or other lung conditions, the most important steps are:
These symptoms are not for a massage appointment or a wait-and-see approach. Per Nidirect guidance:
Call 999 immediately if someone has:
Also seek urgent help for: Significant new breathing difficulty or chest pain
Massage is not a substitute for vaccination, prescribed treatment or medical advice. As the respiratory season approaches, free seasonal flu vaccination is available in Northern Ireland for eligible groups, including people aged 65 and over, pregnant people, people with certain long-term health conditions such as chronic chest conditions, carers and eligible children up to Year 12. RSV vaccination is also available for people aged 75 and over and residents in care homes for older adults.
If you think you might be eligible, check with your GP, a participating pharmacy or an HSC vaccination clinic. It is a practical way to look after yourself and the people around you.
Aromatherapy deserves an extra note this month. Fragrance is not automatically relaxing for everyone. If you have asthma, allergies, scent sensitivity or have reacted to products before, please tell us at the time of booking. We can discuss an unscented option and choose an approach that feels comfortable. We do not use essential oils as a treatment for asthma, allergy, colds, flu or histamine reactions.
Deep tissue work can still be a suitable option for some well clients, but it is not a βpower throughβ treatment and it is not something we recommend while you are fatigued or recovering from an acute illness. Your feedback always matters: more pressure is not automatically better.
When you are well, a massage can be a welcome part of a September reset. It can create time to rest, ease everyday muscular tension and reconnect with how your body is feeling. The best treatment is always the one chosen around your goals, comfort and preferences.
